Why Switzerland?

The history of this country, its geography, its economy, its politics and the aspirations of its people would be enough to fill several bookshelves.

Twenty cantons and six half cantons, four national languages, two religions, several large political parties, and social and religious peace, more or less assured; one needs no more to see in Switzerland a united Europe in miniature.

A country unique in its diversity – so describes Switzerland where each region differentiates itself from the others and where the landscape affects the behaviour of each individual. The mountain dwellers, in perpetual confrontation with the natural elements have not, faced by such adversity, the disorder of the people of the plain, but one and all recognise an identical emotion. They are all so different and yet all so Swiss.

When visiting Switzerland, a foreigner can choose a region which suits his own preference; a gentle open countryside with its lakes or he may retreat to the wild solitude of forests and mountains. Whether the tourist climbs to three or four thousand metres above sea-level or is involved in the exhiliration of the towns, he will have a sense of well-being wherever he is. The higher he climbs the further in the past he seems to find himself and his enforced slower rhythm conforms to his surroundings. Then when he descends, he fiunds a new country, forward-looking but, at the same time, guarding its basic values.

Switzerland allows a traveller to escape from himself and when he returns to his starting point he discovers that this country, which he wanted to conquer, conquered him.

I am that traveller. This website is my tribute to that country which conquered me.
